- It surprises me that you ask this question, Magnus,
- as you have been in the project since almost the
- beginning. But the answer to this question will
- probably be interesting for the others.
- When you do you own wad, most of the time, you just
- build new levels, but the textures you use are
- those of the original WAD. That's why there are two
- kinds of WADs: IWADs which are the original files
- from iD and contain all the necessary data, and
- PWADs (for patch WAD) which contain only new
- definitions that overwrite those of the IWAD. This
- way, you can make a PWAD that doesn't even contain
- a new level but that just turns cacodemons into
- Bart Simpsons. On the contrary, your PWAD can
- contain just the data of a new level, but the
- textures and monsters are those of DOOM. There are
- very few PWADs that redefine all data. In fact, due
- to a bug in the code for patched flats, IIRC, the
- ceilings and floors can't be patched, so that there
- should be no WAD that doen't need an IWAD.
- The fact that the editors require registered IWADs
- to work is just an understandable legal issue.
- And as iD seems to be quite irritable about this
- subject, let's stick to this:
- When editing WADs, a registered IWAD MUST be
- present.
- When editing our own BMW format, we do whatever we
- want. BUT if we do that, we have to transform the
- format so that it doesn't look too much like the
- WADs. One more argument for BM1 that will require
- registered DOOM or Heretic WADs and a different BM2
- that will load BMWs.
-

-
- Certainly not.

-
- Well, this doesn't concern us, of course ;) But the
- official release should be as legal as possible.
